When it comes to coaching high school soccer, communication is the most vital part to consider on way to achieve success. Coaching is an art of communication. It explains what you want of people in such a way that allows them to perform it.
When it comes to soccer coaching, I’ve observed that most of the coaches often are the ex-players. Then also they have to face a number of issues while coaching young players. These issues come up due to the inability to communicate properly. You must recognize that there are certain issues related to communication that need special attention if your job is to be made easier.
I’ll explain them one by one.
In the course of watching the young players on field, coaches often get emotional. The coaches become spectators instead of adopting a critical approach to observing the kids. As such they are not able to see the key points that could make all the difference in their team’s performance. Here, they miss out on the important part of having a professional conversation aimed at getting a win.
The coaches are generally not trained to communicate effectively although they have all the knowledge of the game. For example; in soccer coaching, many coaches are not aware of the utility of a flip chart or a video. It’s important for the coach to know the game well but if he is unable to communicate his thoughts, the training gets repetitive.
This occupies greater importance in coaching high school soccer as the players are young but also know the various facets of the game. They have been doing these soccer drills for some time but at different levels. By keep on changing training format, coaches can avoid the monotony of repeating the same messages again and again.
The coaches have a tendency to just forget that training sessions are being executed by human beings and not machines. The objective of training is lost because the coaches get so much occupied in just conducting the sessions well. For example; Sending out instructions without taking the player’s name leads to uncertainty and confusion.
There are certain guiding principles in football coaching which are as follows:
• All messages from the coach are important for players. They should therefore be taken and read correctly.
• Convey your messages in a positive language to encourage players to play their best game. Challenge them to be better rather than punishing them for being poor.
• Make sure you spend quality time with all your players. Studies indicate that coaches spend relatively more time with star players in team (up to seven times more!).
• Don’t wait for the problems to arise to sort them out.
• Strengthen the player’s self respect by matching criticism with praise. When it comes to coaching high school soccer, tilt the balance slightly more towards praise.
Trust me. When you apply these rules to your training sessions, the benefits will be much more that you’ll expect.
