A Look At The Five Positions In Basketball

7:54 pm in Weight Loss Activities by seph

In the game of basketball, there are five different positions that players can choose from. Each of these positions is important for the overall success of the team. Take a moment to look over each position to better understand its role in the game.

The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that the ball continues to make its way across the court. This individual must know what is happening around them and to ensure that they are shooting the ball quickly. While this person might occasionally shoot for the basket, their main goal is to pass the ball with accuracy as quickly as possible.

A shooting guard is focused on scoring points in the game. They will need to be able to prepare their shots for the basket and do so in as efficient of a manner as possible. Improved ball handling will also be essential for the individual in this position to have. This is going to be the result of players from the opposing team being focused on stealing away the ball as shots are being set up.

It will be important that the shooting guard uses the point guard and small forward to help them to effectively setup their shots.

This position will be described at the power player. You’ll find that both scoring and strength will be the two main focuses of this player. They will block other players from making baskets, will helping to take blocks meant for the shooters in the game. A strong jump will be vital for this player.

As they run their defense, this player will look to take away the ball and to stall the momentum of their opponents. For this player, both sides of the court will be important.

This individual will focus on the basket and take the time to ensure that no one can drive the ball. This means their athletic ability needs to be strong and that they have the ability to both score and block in a moment’s notice. This individual will need to focus on both rebounds and keeping their team protected.

Typically, this will be the player with the greatest height and their goal is to get in the way of their ball. It will be important that this player knows how to block the ball and will have the skills that are needed for setting up slam dunks as well. It will also be important that they properly stall players by adjusting their path.

You’ll find that each position has its own important role in basketball. Take your time to explore each position you can choose from and focus your efforts on improving the necessary skills to be successful in it.

Boston Celtics Vs. Miami Heat Game Breakdown

4:46 pm in Weight Loss Activities by seph

The Boston Celtics avoided another heartbreaking loss to Miami Heat by holding on for a 93-91 overtime win in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Earlier in the series the Celtics lost Game 2 in overtime after dominating the Heat for the majority of the game. Boston once again nearly let one get away. They led by as many as 18-points, but were unable to keep Miami from making another late charge. However , this time the Celtics finished the job. Game 5 is scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 EST and will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN.

Even with the Celtics back-to-back wins and that close call in Game 2, oddsmakers are not giving them much of a chance in Game 5. The Heat are listed as 8-point favorites over Boston with the total set at 179. Make sure you get the latest info on the Heat and Celtics series by double clicking this link.

Boston

The Celtics did exactly what needed to be done in Boston, but they are going to have to figure out a way to win one in Miami if they want to get back to the NBA Finals. I do not believe there is any question the Celtics think they can attain that feat in Game 5, but they’re going to need to do a better job of closing out games. The Celtics got off to awesome starts in each of the last three games, but have repeatedly let Miami come crawling back in the second half. Boston was up 14 at intermission of Game 4 behind 61 first half points. They came out and scored just 28 in the final two periods of regulation. It’s almost as if this team gets a little too comfortable and stops executing the game plan.

All that matters to Boston is they won the game, but it’s something to keep a look out for going forward. Rajon Rondo continued his incredible play with 15 points and 15 assists, Paul Pierce had a game-high 23 points, Ray Allen hit four 3-pointers on his way to 16 points, and Kevin Garnett posted a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. The Celtics also got a rare lift from their bench. As Keyon Dooling scored 10 points in just 16 minutes.

If you have watched this series, you realise that the most important player on the floor for the Celtics is Garnett. When he isn’t on the floor, Miami seems to always make a run. Garnett’s defense is what has allowed the Celtics to get back in the series. He has to stay clear of foul trouble if the Celtics are going to win Game 5.

Miami

The Heat will look to get back on track in front of their home crowd. Miami has came out extremely flat in each of the last two games. They can not continue to wait until the second half to start playing with a sense of urgency. The big story heading into Game 5, is the likely return of Chris Bosh, who has missed the last 9 games with a lower abdominal strain. There’s no question the Heat could use the All-Star power forward, especially on the offensive end.

The one person who truly has to be anticipating the return of Bosh is Dwayne Wade. In the 2 games in Boston, Wade has got off to horrible starts in the 1st half and is struggling to get easy looks. In Game 4, he had 20 points but was just 7 of 22 from the floor. Wade did help out with 7 rebounds, six assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks. With Bosh back in the line-up it should open up more lanes for Wade to get to the basket.

LeBron James led the Heat with 29 points, but he fouled out in overtime, leaving Wade basically on his own against Boston. Miami got a big time performance out of Udonis Haslem, who came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 17 rebounds.

The one thing that continues to haunt this team is their execution late in games. With the scored locked up at 89-89, the Heat had the ball with just 21 seconds left on the clocky. They ended up getting a poor shot from Haslem, who shouldn’t even have the ball in his hands in that situation. I also wasn’t impressed with Wade taking a 3-pointer at the end of overtime with the Heat down just 2-points.

Analysis Of The Indiana Pacers Vs. Miami Heat Matchup

11:33 am in Weight Loss Activities by seph

The Indiana Pacers rallied from a 9-point first quarter deficit in Game 2 to beat the Miami Heat 94-75 on Thursday. The Pacers have now won back-to-back games to take a 2-1 series lead. Indiana can really take charge of the series if they can knock off Miami at home in Game 4 on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 EST and will be broadcasted nationally on ABC.

Oddsmakers seem to think the Heat will get things turned around. Miami is listed as a 1.5-point favorite over Indiana in Game 4 with the total set at 178 points. For the latest on the Heat/Pacers Eastern Conference matchup, you can read about it here.

Miami

The injury to Chris Bosh looks to be having a bigger impact than anticipated. While Dwayne Wade and LeBron James receive the majority of the credit when talking about the “big three,” the Heat are 0-2 in the postseason without Bosh in the lineup. I do not believe anyone anticipated the Heat to come out and play as poorly as they did in Game 3.

The loss of Bosh has forced James to play a lot of power forward in this series, and it seems to be taking its toll on him. James came out and scored 16 points in the first half of Game 3, but ended up finishing the game with just 22 points. He was obviously not the same player in the final two quarters. Wade wasn’t much help in Game 3, as he had just five points on 2 of 13 shooting. Wade added to the worst playoff performance of his career by getting into a heated argument with head coach Erik Spoelstra.

In the first 2 games of the series, James and Wade combined to average 56.5 points per game. It was the rest of the team that did not show up. That was not the case in Game 3. Mario Chalmers came out of no where to scorer 25 points on 10 of 15 shooting. Had you told me Chalmers was going to score 25 before that game, I would have said there is no way Miami would lose that game. The big question for Game 4 is whether or not Chalmers can continue to be a force offensively. If he does, you’ve got to like the Heat’s chances of heading home tied up at 2-2.

Indiana

Few thought the Pacers had any chance of advancing past the Heat, but the injury to Bosh along with the superb defense by Indiana has changed the outlook of this series. While the Pacers have to feel good about taking a 2-1 lead, I believe the series will be decided on Sunday. One thing that is working against the Pacers for Game 4, is the fact that there are a couple of days between Game 3 and Game 4. That extra day of rest is going to benefit the Heat a lot more than it is Indiana.

The Pacers had a bunch of players step up with big games on Thursday. George Hill scored a team-high 20 points, Roy Hibbert had a huge double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds, David West added 14 points and 9 boards and Danny Granger wound up with 17 points, 7 rebounds and four assists. Granger also deserves a lot of credit for his defensive efforts against James.

The most surprising thing about Indiana’s Game 3 winn, the Heat bench outplayed Indiana’s reserves 23-15. However , it’s really not something to get worried about if you are Indiana. In contrast to the Heat, who seriously need production out of their bench, all five of the Pacers starters can score the basketball.

Whether the Pacers can take a 3-1 lead in the series is going to come down to what they do defensively. They have held the Heat to just 75 points in each of the last two games. I think the magic number for Indiana is 85. If they can keep the Heat under 85 points in Game 4, they have a great shot at winning the game.

Preview Of Philadelphia 76ers Vs Boston Celtics

5:32 am in Weight Loss Activities by seph

The Boston Celtics defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 101-85 in Game 5. The Celtics have a 3-2 lead in the series, with the two teams headed back to Philadelphia for Game 6 on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 EST and will be televised nationally on ESPN. There seems to be a fair chance the 76ers will hold serve at home and force a Game 7 on Saturday. Neither team has been able to win back-to-back games in the series.

Taking a look at the NBA odds for Game 6, oddsmakers have Philadelphia favored by 2-points over Boston with the total set at 175.5. For the latest on this series, click this link.

Boston

Even though the Celtics went on to win by 16-points, Game 5 wasn’t decided until the second half. Boston actually trailed the 76ers 47-50 at halftime. The Celtics got an unexpected big game from Brandon Bass, who had a game-high 27 points on 9 of 13 shooting. Bass did most of his damage in 3rd quarter when he outscored the entire 76ers team 18-16. The Celtics turned a 3-point deficit into a 9-point lead and were able to add to the lead in the 4th quarter.

After a poor perfomance in Game 4, Kevin Garnett bounced back to score 20 points with 6 rebounds, Paul Pierce only attempted 7 field goals but was able to finish the game with 16 points, and Rajon Rondo added 13 points and 14 assists. Ray Allen made his first start of the postseason, replacing Avery Bradley. Allen had just 5 points on 2 of 7 shooting.

I wasn’t stunned to see the Celtics dominate at home in Game 5, particularly after blowing an 18-point lead in Game 4. Boston ended up shooting 52.2% from the field. The Celtics have to feel pretty confident about finishing the series in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia

The 76ers came out and looked like they were going to give the Celtics all they could handle in Game 5, but things really got out of hand in the second half. After putting up 50 points on the Celtics defense in the first 2 quarters, Philadelphia managed just 35 points in the second half. It was a completely different finish than what we saw in Game 4, when the 76ers outscored the Celtics 61-37 in the final two quarters of play.

Philadelphia got a big game out of Elton Brand, who scored a team-high 19 points on 8 of 13 shooting. Brand hadn’t scored in double-figures since Game 2 of their opening round series against the Chicago Bulls. The 76ers had 7 different players score at least 8-points. Lavoy Allen was second on the team with 12 points, Evan Turner had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Spencer Hawes and Jrue Holiday each finished with 10 points. Andre Iguodala and Lou Williams combined for just 17 points and together were just 6 of 20 from the field.

The thing that surprised me in Game 5, is the fact that Philadelphia lost by 16 points when they hit 47% of their shots from the field. In their Game 4 win at home they only shot 39%. I don’t think this team can be disappointed with what they did offensively, it is the defense that has to get better if they are going to force a Game 7. There’s no doubt the 76ers will come out with a ton of energy at home in Game 6, but I personally think this will be the last time they take floor this season.

Denver Nuggets Vs. Los Angeles Lakers Game 7 Preview

12:05 am in Weight Loss Activities by seph

The Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers will return to the Staples Center for Game 7. Denver avoided elimination for a second straight game, crushing the Lakers 113-96 at home in Game 6. This is the first series to go 7 games in the 2012 NBA Playoffs and it figures to be a great one. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:30 EST on Saturday and will be televised nationally on TNT.

The home team has historically been tough to beat in a Game 7, and oddsmakers appear to believe that trend will continue. Los Angeles is favored by 6-points with the total set at 196.5. For the latest on this series click here.

Denver

The Nuggets looked like their season was going to come to an end after falling behind 3-1 and the series headed back to LA for Game 5. Two straight wins have completely changed the outlook of this series, as Denver rolls into Los Angeles for Game 7 with all the momentum. I questioned if the Nuggets would suffer a let down after that huge win in Game 5, but that wasn’t the case . They came out and arguably played their best game of the series on Thursday.

Ty Lawson put on an unbelievable performance in Game 5. He had a game-high 32 points behind an incredible shooting performance. Lawson went 13 of 18 from the field and was 5 of 6 from long distance. On top of that, the point guard added six assists and five rebounds.

Lawson was not the only one having their way against the Lakers in that game. Kenneth Faried recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Danilo Gallinari finished with 12 points and seven assists, and Corey Brewer and Andre Miller combined for 30 points off the bench.

Lots of credit must be given to head coach George Karl. The Nuggets don’t have the size or the superstars like you see on the Lakers, but they understand their role and most importantly they believe they can win this series.

Los Angeles

Outside of Kobe Bryant, who is one of the greatest competitors in the NBA, the Lakers have not shown up mentally or physically in the last two games. I am not sure if the tempo at which Denver is playing has completely wore down this team, but the Lakers have looked extremely flat late in the series.

Bryant continued to do his part, leading the way with a team-high 31 points on 13 of 23 shooting. As for Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, neither player played good enough for the Lakers to win. Bynum had a respectable 11 points and 16 rebounds, but shot 4 of 11 from the field. Gasol wasn’t a factor at all, scoring just three points on 1 of 10 shooting. Not only were Bynum and Gasol not contributing on the offensive end, they weren’t any better on the defensive side of the ball.

You know Bryant is going bring it in Game 7, but it’s pretty obvious he can’t do it alone. He could put up 50 points and the Lakers are going to struggle if Bynum and Gasol don’t step up their play. Los Angeles should get a boost from Metta World Peace, who hasn’t been able to play the 1st six games while serving a suspension. Whether it’s enough to get them to Western Conference Semifinals, is difficult to say after how poorly this team has looked in in the last two games.

NBA Predictions: Oklahoma City Thunder Vs. San Antonio Spurs Matchup

12:05 am in Weight Loss Activities by seph

The Oklahoma City Thunder went into San Antonio and defeated the Spurs 108-103 in Game 5 on Monday. The Thunder have now won 3 straight since losing the first 2 games in San Antonio to open the series. Oklahoma City can close out the series and advance to the NBA Finals with a win at home in Game 6 on Wednesday. If the Spurs can find a way to win on the road, the series will shift back to San Antonio for Game 7 on Friday.

Looking at the odds for Game 6, oddsmakers have the Thunder favored by 5-points over San Antonio with the total set at 202. Oklahoma City is 4-1 ATS and 3 of the 5 games have gone over the total in the series. For the latest on the Spurs and Thunder series, be sure to click on this link.

San Antonio

By the time the SPurs got it going in Game 5, it was too late. San Antonio really struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half, which permitted the Thunder to take an early 8-point lead into intermission. While the Spurs were able to get in a rhythm offensively in the second half, they couldn’t stop Oklahoma City from putting the ball in the basket. It’s almost as if the Spurs have lost their edge after the Thunder snapped their 20-game winning streak.

While Manu Ginobili has mainly came off the bench for the Spurs, Greg Popovich decided to insert him in the starting lineup. Ginobili answered with a big time performance. He had a game-high 34-points to go with 7 assists and 6 rebounds. Tim Duncan started slow, but was able to finish the game with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Tony Parker added 20 points, but was just 5 of 14 from the field. The Thunder have done a fantastic job of not letting Parker dominate this series.

The 2 things that are killing the Spurs are turnovers and poor play from their supporting cast. The Spurs turned the ball over 21 times in Game 6 and Stephen Jackson was the only role player to reach double-figures with 13 points. If San Antonio is going to force a Game 7, they will need to improve in both these areas.

Oklahoma City

The Thunder have completely taken over this series. They might be young and inexperienced, but they do not play like it. This team has repeatedly hit enormous shots late in games. While San Antonio is scoring a lot of points, you Oklahoma City has really made it tough on them defensively. The Thunder have thrived on forcing San Antonio into making mistakes, but they have also done a great job of not letting the Spurs get easy looks. Something the Jazz and Clippers really struggled with in the first 2 rounds.

Kevin Durant continued to play at an extremely high level. He finished up with a team-high 27 points on 10 of 19 shooting. James Harden went 6 for 11 for 20 points off the bench, and his 3-pointer at the end of the 4th quarter was arguably the biggest shot of his career. Russell Westbrook finished up with 23 points and 12 assists, but was just 9 of 24 from the field.

Oklahoma City didn’t get huge production out of their supporting cast, like they did in their previous two wins. No one outside the big three reached double-digits, but they got great minutes out of Daequan Cook and Nick Collison, who combined for 15 points on 6 of 6 shooting. Cook scored 8 points in just four minutes of playing time.

There’s no doubt Oklahoma City is playing with plenty of confidence, but I don’t believe Game 6 is a lock at home. While San Antonio has to win to keep the series alive, there is a lot of pressure on the Thunder to close out the series at home. The one thing that concerns me with the Thunder, is the fact that Westbrook continues to get more shot attempts than Durant. Aside from that, this team is playing about as well as they have all year.

Preview Of Los Angeles Clippers Vs. San Antonio Spurs

2:33 am in Weight Loss Activities by seph

The San Antonio Spurs overcame a 24-point deficit to stun the Los Angeles Clippers 96-86 in Game 3. The Spurs trailed 33-11 after the first period, but were down just 9-points at intermission and took charge of the game with a monster 3rd quarter. San Antonio outscored the Clippers 26-8 in that third period. San Antonio will attempt to finish off the Clippers on Sunday when the 2 teams clash in Los Angeles for Game 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:30 EST and will be broadcasted nationally on TNT.

If the Clippers can keep the series alive with a win in Game 4, the series will head back to San Antonio for Game 5 on Tues.. Oddsmakers don’t like their chances. The Spurs are favored by 7.5-points over Los Angeles with the total set at 190. For the lastest on the Spurs and Clippers series double-click here.

San Antonio

The Spurs could have simply threw in the towel and turned their focus to Game 4, but that isn’t what championship teams do. In the 1st quarter San Antonio couldn’t really struggled to get anything to fall offensively and they had no answer for Blake Griffin on the defensive end. The Spurs quickly started to execute on both sides of the ball and before you knew it they were celebrating their seventh straight playoff win and 17th straight victory overall.

Tony Parker was sensational in the Spurs huge comeback. Parker posted a double-double with 23-points and 10 assists and once again played phenomenal defense on Chris Paul. Tim Duncan continued to trouble the Clippers with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Kawhi Leonard added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Manu Ginobili put in 13 points off the bench.

I like the Spurs chances of finishing off the Clippers on Sunday, and I would not be shocked if they closed out the series in fashion. This team understands the importance of getting as much rest as possible in the playoffs, and the last thing they want is for this series to go any longer than it has to.

Los Angeles

The Clippers had their opportunity to make this a series, and you could not ask for a better start to Game 3. Not only did the Clippers let a 24-point lead slip away, their hopes of winning this series went down the drain. No team in NBA history has been able to come back and win after falling behind 3-0 in a series. I’m not sure if the Clippers believe they’ve still got a chance.

Griffin only missed three shots on his way to a 20 point first half, but he was not able to make the big plays down the stretch when the Clippers needed him the most. Griffin had just eight points in the final 24 minutes, finishing the game with 28 points and 16 rebounds. The Clippers also got a big game from Mo Williams, who scored 19 points off the bench.

The story of the series remains the offensive struggles of Paul, who had a series-high 12 points. Paul contributed 11 assists, but they need his scoring in order to beat the Spurs. He is averaging less than 10 points a game in the series.

The big concern coming into this series, was whether this team would have enough left in the tank after that grueling first round series with the Memphis Grizzlies. No team wants to use tired as an excuse, but I don’t think there’s any doubt this team is hurting. If Los Angles believes they lost the series on Saturday, it’s difficult to see them playing with any energy at all in Game 4.

Oklahoma City Thunder Vs. San Antonio Spurs Game Breakdown

2:33 am in Weight Loss Activities by seph

The Oklahoma City Thunder have tied up the Western Conference Finals at 2-2. The Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs 109-103 at home in Game 3 on Saturday. After allowing San Antonio to win the first two games of the series, Oklahoma City has answered the call with two straight wins of their own. Monday’s Game 5 is one that could decide the series. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 EST and will be broadcasted nationally on TNT.

Oddsmakers apparently think the Spurs will be able to get back on track at home. The Spurs are favored by 5-points over the Thunder with the total set at 202 points. For the latest on the Spurs and Thunder matchup, click this link.

Oklahoma City

Notwithstanding a poor shooting night from James Harden and Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City connected on 56.4% of their field goal attempts in Game 4. Westbrook had just 7 points on 2 of 10 shooting, while Harden managed just 11 points on 4 of 13 from the field. Kevin Durant finished up with a game-high 36 points on 13 of 20 from the floor, but it was Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka who made the difference on Saturday.

In what many consider the best performance of his NBA career, Ibaka finished with 26 points on a perfect 11 of 11 shooting from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line. Perkins scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while only missing 2 field goal attempts all game. Combined Ibaka and Perkins went 18 of 20 for 41 points.

It appears as if the Thunder have figured out how to attack the Spurs defense, but they are not going to be able to depend on Ibaka and Perkins to go off for 41 points in Game 5. If Oklahoma City is going to take control of this series with a win in San Antonio, they’re going to have to get more out of Harden and Westbrook.

San Antonio

With everything that was going right for the Thunder, I was impressed that the Spurs managed to keep the game as close as they did. San Antonio was well inside striking distance in the 4th quarter, but could not make that last push to take the lead. After cruising to 10 straight wins to start the postseason, the Spurs head home with a ton of pressure in Game 5. San Antonio needs to stop the bleeding and keep the Thunder from getting a chance to close out the series in Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Tim Duncan led the way with 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Kawhi Leonard added in 17 points and nine boards of his own. Unfortunately for the Spurs, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili couldn’t get it going. Parker was held to just 12 points on 5 of 15 shooting, while Ginobili was able to put in just 13 points off the bench.

The Spurs have to be happy with the efforts of their supporting cast, but it’s going to be tough for them to beat Oklahoma City when they only get 25 points from Ginobili and Parker. If the Spurs are going to win Game 5 at home, they are going to need both players to be a bigger factor offensively. Anytime you allow the other team to score over 100 points on 56% shooting, you cannot be real happy with your defense. However , I do not believe it was a horrible effort by San Antonio. I think the Spurs will take their chances on Perkins and Ibaka making 15-footers every time. I look for San Antonio to come out and get a win at home, as the Thunder are due for a let down after two incredible performances in Oklahoma City.
